Q.01

How do I check a substance's REACH registration?

Just ask me with the substance's name, EC number or CAS number, for example "Is CAS 50-00-0 REACH-registered, and at what tonnage band?" I'll look it up in ECHA's register of REACH-registered substances and cite the entry. An EC or CAS number gives the most exact match.

Approach: I ran formaldehyde through the ECHA REACH registered-substances register and the GB (Defra) UK REACH grandfathered registrations list as a worked example.

What you get back (formaldehyde, CAS 50-00-0):

  • EU REACH: It is registered with ECHA (it holds at least one REACH registration dossier). The entry shows EC 200-001-8, ECHA substance ID 100.000.002, a registered tonnage band of 1,000,000 - 10,000,000 tonnes, and the link to the CLP Annex VI entry (Index number 605-001-00-5). It also links to the ECHA CHEM overview page [1].
  • GB (UK REACH): It appears on Defra's grandfathered registrations notified substances list, published 30 September 2021. That list gives identifiers only: no tonnage, registrant or uses. It is not a verified register of every registration transferred into UK REACH, so a missing substance there is not proof it lacks a GB registration [2].

Other questions I can answer from the registration dossiers:

  • Endpoint study records and summaries: toxicology, ecotoxicology, physical-chemical properties, environmental fate and toxicokinetics. You can narrow these to key studies, for example "the key study for skin sensitisation".
  • Registered uses, composition, manufacture and guidance on safe use.
  • The registrant's classification and labelling, DNELs and the PBT assessment.
  • Substances filtered by tonnage band, including "Ceased manufacture", "Intermediate use only" or "No longer valid".

Useful related checks: In the same question I can also check the substance's Candidate List (SVHC) status, Annex XIV authorisation and Annex XVII restrictions, and its CLP Annex VI harmonised classification.

Tell me the substance and what you need, such as status, tonnage, uses or a specific endpoint.
