Q.01

Where can I find the NPPA price list?

NPPA (India's National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority) publishes its price lists on its official website, www.nppa.gov.in. The current ceiling prices are on the therapeutic-category ceiling price list page, and older consolidated lists are on the Compendium of Prices page.

Where each list sits

ListOfficial pageWhat it contains
Therapeutic-category ceiling price listshttps://www.nppa.gov.in/en/therapeuticcategorywiseceilingpricelistFive PDFs dated March 2026: Anti-Cancer (131 formulations), Anti-Diabetes (11), Anti-HIV (29), Anti-TB (30) and Cardio-Vascular (66). Each line gives the medicine, dosage form and strength, priced unit and ceiling price in rupees.
Compendium of Priceshttps://www.nppa.gov.in/en/compendiumofpriceThe 2022 and 2016 compendiums. Each line gives the medicine, strength, pack, ceiling price, and the S.O. number and date of the notification that fixed the price.
List of Bulk Drugs Under DPCO 1995https://www.nppa.gov.in/en/listofbulkdrugsunderdpco199576 numbered bulk drugs, with notes where an entry was later deleted (page last updated 05-09-2018). Historical only.

Sample entries

  • March 2026 category lists: Vinblastine injection 1 mg/ml, ₹26.15 per ml [1]; Teneligliptin tablet 20 mg, ₹11.35 per tablet [2]; Zidovudine capsule 300 mg, ₹2.63 per capsule [3]; Rifampicin tablet 450 mg, ₹5.66 per tablet [4]; Verapamil tablet 40 mg, ₹0.88 per tablet [5].
  • 2022 compendium: Zolpidem tablet 5 mg, ₹5.98, fixed by S.O. 1499(E) of 30.03.2022 [6].
  • 2016 compendium: an entry with ceiling price ₹13.32, fixed by S.O. 1687(E) of 09.05.2016 [7].
  • DPCO 1995 list: entry 1, Sulphamethoxazole, "deleted vide so 626(E) dated 2.9.97" [8].

The March 2026 category PDFs are the most recent lists I found. I couldn't open the live NPPA site today, so I can't confirm whether newer price notifications have been posted since.

Approach: I searched the NPPA ceiling-price lists, the 2016 and 2022 Compendiums of Prices, and the DPCO 1995 bulk-drug list, then tried the live NPPA website, which could not be reached.

I can look up the ceiling price for a specific formulation in these lists if you give me the name.

Q.02

How do I check a medicine's ceiling price?

To check a ceiling price, look up the medicine by generic name, dosage form and strength in NPPA's current therapeutic-category ceiling price lists (March 2026). Then match the priced unit, because the ceiling price applies to that unit (for example "1 Tablet"), not to a whole pack. If the medicine isn't in one of those five categories, the 2022 Compendium of Prices is the next place to look. It also gives the S.O. notification number and date that fixed the price.

Steps

  1. Use the generic name and the exact form and strength. Searching by brand won't work. Different strengths and release types of the same molecule each have their own ceiling price.
  2. Check the current category lists first. These are the Anti-Cancer, Anti-Diabetes, Anti-HIV, Anti-TB and Cardio-Vascular PDFs on NPPA's therapeutic-category ceiling price list page. Metformin is an example:
Serial no.FormulationUnitCeiling price (₹)
8Metformin Tablet 1000mg1 Tablet3.57 [9]
9Metformin Tablet 500mg1 Tablet2.07 [10]
10Metformin Modified release Tablet 1000mg1 Tablet4.15 [11]
  1. Otherwise, use the Compendium of Prices. Each 2022 line gives the strength and release type, the unit, the ceiling price, and the notification that fixed it. For example, Metformin 500 mg controlled-release tablet is ₹2.13 per tablet, fixed by S.O. 1499(E) of 30.03.2022 [12]. Metformin 1000 mg immediate-release tablet is ₹4.00 per tablet under the same notification [13].
  2. Prefer the most recent source. The lists don't always agree. The 2022 compendium gives Metformin 500 mg immediate-release as ₹1.67 per tablet [14], but the March 2026 Anti-Diabetes list gives Metformin Tablet 500mg as ₹2.07 [10]. Treat the compendium as an archive. Where you need the price currently in force, go by the latest list or notification for that formulation. The compendium's S.O. reference tells you which notification to trace.
  3. Compare against your pack. Multiply the per-unit ceiling price by the units in the pack. For example, a 10-tablet strip of Metformin 1000mg from the 2026 list would be 10 × ₹3.57.

None of these datasets holds price notifications issued after the March 2026 lists. A formulation priced or revised since then won't show up in them.

Approach: I searched NPPA's March 2026 therapeutic-category ceiling price lists and the 2022 Compendium of Prices, using metformin as the worked example.

If you give me a generic name, form and strength, I can pull its ceiling price and the notification behind it.
