Q.01

How do I search the AICIS inventory?

You can search the Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals (AIIC) in two ways: here, by asking me (CAS number, Chemical Record (CR) number, name or synonym), or on AICIS's own website. Searching by CAS number is the most reliable way to find a listing. Each listing gives a CR number, a CAS number, a chemical name, a molecular formula and any obligations attached to it.

Searching it here Ask me about a chemical and I'll pull the matching listing. Here is formaldehyde as an example:

How you searchWhat comes back
By CAS number "50-00-0"Formaldehyde, CR 380, formula CH2O [1]
By CR number "380"The same listing [1]
By the synonym "formalin"CR 380, plus two formaldehyde polymers: CR 12103 (CAS 9016-83-5) [2] and CR 17002 (CAS 27553-53-3) [3]

Some things to know:

  • Search by exact identifier. A CAS or CR number gives you exactly one listing. Name and synonym searches are looser and also return related entries, such as polymers, so check that the CAS number on the result is the one you want.
  • Read the specific information requirements. For formaldehyde, the listing says the introducer "must tell us in writing within 28 calendar days" if certain things change compared with the original assessment under the 1989 Act. Examples include a significant change in use or volume, the start of manufacture in Australia, or new information about an adverse effect [1].
  • Confidential listings can't be found by name. Their name, CAS number and molecular formula are all shown as "Confidential". Only the CR number and the obligations are visible, for example CR 43134 [4].

I can also check a chemical against the related Australian lists at the same time:

  • AICIS banned or restricted chemicals (Rotterdam and Minamata import/export conditions)
  • the IChEMS Register
  • the Risk Management Recommendations Register
  • the Rolling Action Plan
  • the Register of Industrial Chemical Introducers

Searching it on the AICIS website AICIS's own search portal is at services.industrialchemicals.gov.au, and its site search is at industrialchemicals.gov.au/search. AICIS also has guidance pages called "What is the Inventory and who must use it?" and "I can't find my chemical on the Inventory". I couldn't open those pages this time because the site wasn't responding, so I can't quote AICIS's own instructions for using the portal.

Approach: I searched the AIIC listings held in the datasets and tried to open the AICIS guidance pages on its official site, which did not respond.

If you give me CAS numbers, or a list of them, I can look up their Inventory status and any attached obligations.
